Special Events for Young and New Members at ABI's Spring Meeting

We are excited to announce that the Ambassador Program – the brainchild of former YNMC co-chair and current ABI Vice President-Membership Melissa Kibler Knoll and ABI Membership Director Chris Thackston – will begin at the Annual Spring Meeting. This means that new members will be assigned to senior ABI members who will facilitate your introduction to ABI’s products and services, help you identify ways to become involved and assist you in integrating into the organization by providing opportunities to meet and network with other ABI members. Ambassador Program Chair Jim Markus will kick it all off at the YNMC’s traditional reception, now renamed the “Young and New Member/Ambassador Reception,” on Thursday, April 20, at 5:00 p.m. If you are not a “new” member but are a member of the YNMC, you are also invited to the reception and should attend. The reception, sponsored by Corporate Revitalization Partners LLC, provides an opportunity to introduce yourself to ABI’s senior officers, directors and staff, and it is a great way to begin the fun festivities in Washington, D.C.

On Saturday, April 22, at 8:00 a.m., the YNMC will jointly sponsor a program on international bankruptcies and chapter 15 with the International and Litigation Committees. Judge Barry Russell (of the Bankruptcy Evidence Manual fame) and Canadian Justice J.M. Farley (the leading Canadian jurist on cross-border insolvency issues) will hold a joint "cross-border" hearing on issues facing a company that is headquartered in Canada and is subject to a CCAA proceedings, but also holds substantial assets in the United States and has therefore filed a chapter 15...and then a chapter 11! Lawyers from both sides of the border will argue the issues. The format and content promise to make this program one of the best at the Annual Spring Meeting.

The specific programs and activities noted above are in addition to ABI's quality series of programs and activities scheduled for the Spring Meeting. If you are not already attending the meeting, please review the brochures or www.abiworld.org for more information and consider attending!

Do You Want to Write an ABI Journal Article?

We are happy to announce that the ABI Journal will be publishing a Young and New Member column. It is expected that the column will be published approximately every other issue depending, among other things, on ABI Journal space limitations. Anyone interested in contributing should pick a topic that is appropriate for young and new members (we believe most articles will easily fall into this description), make sure that the Journal has not written something on this same point in recent history, draft an original article in conformity with the ABI Journal "Style Sheet and Editorial Guidelines" (see www.abiworld.org/journalguidelines), and send the proposed article to Doug Deutsch (ddeutsch@chadbourne.com). One outstanding article submitted will be published in the ABI Journal. All other articles may be published in the YNMC newsletter. The YNMC also invites all members to write articles for the newsletter. Such articles should also be submitted to Doug Deutsch. Frequent quality submissions to the YNMC newsletter may be used as a factor for consideration in selecting an article for submission to the ABI Journal.

YNMC Volunteers Wanted for ABI Event in Houston

ABI is planning to hold an educational seminar and a reception in Houston this summer. Local ABI members will carry out the planning for both the educational session and the reception. We are currently looking for a member of the Young and New Member Committee to participate on this committee and, among other things, ensure that young and new members (and non-members) are informed about the event. This is an excellent volunteer opportunity, as you will be working with senior bankruptcy professionals in Houston. There will also be plenty of coverage of the event in ABI publications. There is not a great time commitment to participate, and no travel is required. The committee carries out planning and fundraising efforts by phone and e-mail. If you are interested in learning more, please contact Brian Shaw, a Young and New Member Committee co-chair, at bshaw100@shawgussis.com.
